The following is a listing of WEEKLY FRONT MONTH CHARTS with the Commitments of Traders data plotted over the weekly chart. The data plotted is as follows:

ALL DATA IS PLOTTED RELATIVE TO THE ALL TIME AND FIVE YEAR RANGE

The RED line is the REPORTABLE COMMERCIAL NET POSITION.

The LIGHT GREEN line is the REPORTABLE NON-COMMERCIAL (LARGE SPEC) NET POSITION.

The YELLOW (actually brownish) line is the net NON-REPORTABLE (SMALL SPEC) NET POSITION.

The BLACK line is the TOTAL OPEN INTEREST.

A chart like the above LEAN HOGS shows that the reportable net commercial position, reportable non-commercial (large specs) and non-reportable (small specs and small commercial) net position tends to swing from high to low over the course of more than a year.

The chart at the right of Swiss Franc shows that the reportable net commercial position, reportable non-commercial ( large specs) and non-reportable ( small specs and small commercial) net position tends to swing from high to low in as little as a few weeks.

Charts like the Lean Hogs chart above tend to help find changes in longer term trends. The chart is useful to draw conclusions about the Commercial's opinion about market pricing and the reportable non-commercial ( large specs) opinion about trend.

Charts like the Swiss at the right, do not tend to show long trends, but may help find shorter swings. In a market like the Swiss Franc, the reader should study the 1 year or 3 year chart and avoid the ten year chart because the plotting of the data shows that the net positions swing so often that the information on that scale is essentially noise. The Commercial position in charts like the Swiss Franc can move from the longest position in a year to the shortest position in a year in just a few weeks. This suggests the commercial hedges are placed at critical times in the banking cycle and lifted shortly after the event that was being anticipated.

The reader should study the charts to try to learn the characteristics of the commercials in each market.

In order to give a sense of the history of the different groups of data AND provide a useable tool, 10 year charts and 3 year charts are presented.

The charts are updated every week on the day following the "futures only" release from the CFTC. The charts are updated through the date indicated in the lower right corner of the chart.

The continuous front month charts in Ten Year Notes and Bonds reflect the change in contract terms from 8% to 6% effective with the expiration of the December, 1999 contract.
